Cat Litter and Cat Litter Trays
If a cat cannot go
outside when it wants, it needs access to cat litter. The tray may
not be used when a kitten has learned to use a cat flap, but you should
encourage the cat to stay in at night. Cats and kittens are very clean and
will not soil their beds.
There is a wide range of products available, from plastic trays
to covered models with entrance flaps and filters to minimize odour. Cat litter
trays must be easy to clean and withstand frequent washing and disinfecting.
Toxoplasmosis is an infection that can be shed in a cat’s faeces with out
showing any signs of disease in the cat. However, it is hazardous to humans,
especially pregnant women. To control this the litter tray should be cleaned
every 24 hours. However, some cleaning products can be harmful to cats, so
ask your vet for advice.
There are many
car litter products available, these reduce odour and
absorb urine. It should be easy for the cat to scrape the litter over any
cat
faeces. Sawdust, woodshavings, ash and newspapers are not advised.
