Sphynx Cats

History

The Sphynx cat is a natural mutation, first seen in Canada in 1966. Although there have been reports of hairless cats in other parts of the world, this is the only one to have been bred from, with the idea of establishing a breeding programme to keep the breed going.

Character and Temperament

The Sphynx cat displays an outgoing character not dissimilar to that of the Rex cats - if you do not have much fur you have to have something going for you. This breed is certainly a conversation piece and it does not appear to suffer much from the cod, although additional heating is probably most appreciated.

Type and Standard of Points

The most important point for the Sphynx cat is a complete lack or fur; it is a fault for even a slight down to be perceptible. Most important is the colour, pigmentation and pattern of the skin. The body should feel hard and muscular with long, slim legs, slender neck, and long tapering tail. The head should be longer than it is wide, with a smooth profile and distinctive whisker pads.
