Turkish Van Cats
History
The Turkish Van is a natural
breed of cat, which was first discovered at Lake Van, in Turkey. The strange
thing about this breed, is that it like water, and enjoys swimming. It is
probably descended from the Angora, and is distinguished by the auburn
markings around the face and on the tail. Turkish Van cats have a white
'thumb print' mark between their ears which the Turkish people call the mark
of Allah and so these cats are treated with great respect. If you visit
Istanbul you will see street cats, although these are short haired, they
will normally be white with auburn markings. The first pair were brought
back to Britain in the 1950s and a breeding programme was started; and by
1969 they had official recognition. Today they are on show all over the
world.
Character and Temperament
The Turkish Van cats are very
friendly, sociable and intelligent, and they like company. They are happy to
live quietly in your home, as long as they have attention and interaction.
They also like to go swimming, so if you don't have a pool, let your cat use
the bath.
Type and Standard of Points
The Turkish Van cat is a
chalk-white semi-longhaired cat with auburn markings on the head, ears and
tail, with amber eyes. There have been many colours noted and the Turkish
Van is accepted in both auburn and creams, and with ambers, blue or
odd-coloured eyes. The head is a short wedge shape, with a longish nose and
the ears are large and pointed.
