Norwegian Forest Cats
History
The Norwegian Forest cat, is
very similar to the Maine Coone, but it developed in Scandinavia. Its extra
thick coat gave it warmth in the severe weather. In Norse tales, legends
talk about a fairy cat, and this could have been the Norwegian Forest cat as
its plume-like tail has an ethereal look. It's an excellent climber, and can
climb to areas that most other cat cannot. It has been at cat shows in
Norway since World War II. The breed is very popular in the USA, but has
only recently been imported into the UK.
Character and Temperament
The Norwegian Forest cat is an
independent and lively cat. It's an excellent hunter and enjoys the freedom
of the garden. It enjoys human company and does not like to be left alone of
long periods of time.
Type and Standard of Points
The head should be a triangular
shape, with large ears and almond shaped eyes. The thick, waterproof coat
should be long, with long guard hairs covering the dense undercoat.
