Maine Coon Cats
History
The Maine Coon cat was
originally an American cat, although they have recently been imported into
the UK, where they have become very popular. The name comes from the state
of Maine, where they were first seen and 'Coon' is the brush-like tail that
looks like the tail of a racoon.
The Maine Coon was recognized in
America in 1967, but not until the 1980's were they popular in the UK.
Character and Temperament
Maine Coon cats can grow to be
very large, but they have very sweet natures. They are very friendly and
playful and make wonderful pets.
Type and Standard of Points
Maine Coon cats are large,
beautiful semi-longhaired cats. Their head should be long, but not as long
as the Siamese, with a square muzzle. They have long legs. The coat is
heavy, and tends to be more prolific around the neck, making it look like a
ruff, and around the belly, legs and tail. The coat is not as long as the
Persians coat, and does not require as much grooming. The extra thick coat,
provides the cat with insulation during the harsh winter months. The classic
Maine Coon is a tabby-and-white, but they can be found in any colour and
pattern. The eyes can be green, hazel, copper, blue or odd-eyed.
