When Is Your Cat Ready To Be Mated

It is not unknown for a 16 week old kitten to start calling. However, this is far too young, for a full formal mating, you cat will need to be at least a year old before you can consider it.

A female cat is called a queen for a very good reason, although this has nothing to do with royalty. It is from an old word 'quean', which today means whore or hussy. When you see your cat calling, she will pedal her back legs and expose her rear end, so this makes sense. When she first comes on call, tell the stud owner immediately. It is best to mate your cat on the 2nd or 3rd day of her calling; however an experienced stud owner will probably advise you to bring your cat to the stud as soon as possible.

All matings should be monitored by the stud owner, and when the cats have mated the stud owner will ring you to ask you to take the queen away. The studs owner will then give you a certificate of mating with all the details of the stud cat's pedigree, the dates of mating and the date on which the kittens should be born.
